Sun Damage & Aging Skin

Sun exposure and the natural aging process can lead to a range of visible skin changes, including brown spots, uneven pigmentation, redness, visible blood vessels, fine lines, wrinkles, and changes in texture and overall tone.

At the Laser and Cosmetic Surgery Center of Houston, we offer a range of advanced technologies to address these concerns. Your treatment can be tailored to the specific combination of changes present in your skin. In some cases, multiple laser modalities may be used during the same visit to comprehensively address pigment, redness, texture, and fine lines while limiting the total amount of recovery time.

For deeper wrinkles or more significant signs of photoaging, an initial series of treatments may be recommended before transitioning to a personalized maintenance plan. If you have early or mild-to-moderate signs of aging, periodic treatments as infrequently as once a year may be all that is needed to provide cumulative improvement over time.

Caring for aging skin does not necessarily require frequent procedures or a complicated regimen. Thoughtfully selected treatments performed at appropriate intervals can provide meaningful improvement while still allowing you to look natural and like yourself. The goal is not to change the way you look, but to help your skin look its best as you age.

Brown Spots & Pigmentation

Laser treatments can effectively address many forms of unwanted pigmentation, including freckles, sun spots, and other areas of excess pigment. The most appropriate approach depends on the underlying cause and pattern of pigmentation, as well as your individual skin type and tone.

Not every form of discoloration is ideally treated with laser. In some cases, chemical peels, prescription or medical-grade skincare, or a combination approach may be more appropriate. Dr. Bogle will carefully evaluate your skin and recommend a personalized treatment plan appropriate for your pigmentation concerns.

Redness & Vascular Lesions

Persistent facial redness and visible blood vessels can develop for many reasons, including rosacea, genetic predisposition, sun exposure, hormones, and certain medications. These concerns may appear as diffuse redness, flushing, tiny broken capillaries or spider veins. Vascular lesions can include cherry angiomas, spider angiomas, telangiectasias, venous lakes, or birthmarks such as hemangiomas and port-wine stains. While many of these conditions are medically harmless, they can be cosmetically bothersome and may become more noticeable over time.

At the Laser and Cosmetic Surgery Center of Houston, vascular laser treatments can be used to selectively target unwanted blood vessels and excess redness on the face, neck, chest, under-eye area and other areas of the body. The right treatment depends on the size, depth, and location of the vessels, as well as your skin type and treatment goals. Some isolated lesions such as small cherry angiomas may respond in one session, while diffuse redness, more extensive visible vessels, or vascular birthmarks often require a series of initial treatments followed by periodic maintenance treatment for best results. Not all vascular lesions will respond to treatment. Your treatment plan may include one laser or light device or a combination of technologies selected to address your specific concerns.

Acne Scarring & Post-Acne Marks

Even after active acne has resolved, it can leave behind a range of lasting skin changes. Patients often refer to all of these concerns as scars, but persistent red or brown marks are different from true textural scars, and they often require different treatment approaches.

Post-acne red and brown discoloration can remain visible for months after a blemish has healed. These marks may be treated with a customized combination of vascular or pigment-targeting laser treatments, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and medical-grade or prescription skincare. Sun protection and ongoing acne control are also important components of preventing new discoloration and helping existing marks fade.

True acne scars involve a change in the skin’s texture or underlying support structure. They may appear as rolling depressions, sharply defined “ice-pick” scars, boxcar scars, or even raised scars. Because scar patterns can vary and many individuals suffer from a mixture of different scar types, the most successful treatment plans may involve a combination of complementary approaches rather than relying on one type of treatment alone.

Dr. Bogle will evaluate the type, depth, location, and distribution of your acne scars, as well as your skin type and downtime preferences, to create a personalized treatment plan. Treatment may include various types of laser resurfacing, other energy-based technologies, dermabrasion, scar-release procedures, injectable fillers, chemical peels, or targeted treatment for residual redness and pigmentation.

Improvement in acne scarring is gradual. Most patients will need a series of treatments spaced over time, with collagen production and remodeling continuing for months after each session. Ongoing treatment can meaningfully improve texture, soften the appearance of scars, and create smoother, more even-looking skin.

Scars

Scars can result from surgery, traumatic injury, infection, or other skin conditions. They may remain red, discolored, thickened, depressed, painful, or otherwise noticeable long after the original wound has healed. Numerous lasers and other treatment techniques can be used to improve the appearance of surgical, traumatic, and other scars.

Treatment may be directed toward persistent redness, abnormal blood vessels, excess pigment, thickness, texture, stiffness, or contour irregularity. Different laser technologies and treatment techniques can be selected for different scar characteristics. For example, vascular lasers may help reduce scar redness, while fractional resurfacing can support collagen remodeling and improve texture. Many types of scars benefit from a combination approach using different treatment modalities that work together for a better result than a single treatment alone.

Early treatment is particularly important for surgical and traumatic scars. New scars typically respond better to laser treatment than older scars. The optimal time to start treatment is generally 4 to 6 weeks after surgery or injury when the site has had enough time to heal, but the scar is still early in its active remodeling phase.

If you are planning a procedure that is likely to leave a significant or visible scar, such as a facelift, breast reduction, breast lift, tummy tuck, body-contouring procedure, or other surgery, consider discussing scar management options before your operation. Planning ahead helps ensure that treatment, if needed, can begin at the most appropriate point in your healing process. Not every scar requires treatment, and Dr. Bogle will let you know if she does not think intervention is necessary.

For scars that do require therapy, most benefit from a series of treatments and a combination approach. It may not be possible to improve all scars, particularly those that are white or long-standing. Generally, the goal is to make the scar less noticeable and improve its color, texture, and overall appearance.

Skin Resurfacing & Texture

Laser skin resurfacing can be used to improve skin texture, fine lines, wrinkles, sun-related changes, uneven tone, acne scarring, and other surface irregularities. It can be an excellent option for patients who desire a more comprehensive improvement in the overall quality and appearance of their skin.

Resurfacing works by creating precisely controlled thermal injury within the skin. This stimulates the body’s natural wound-healing response and increases collagen production and remodeling. Results develop gradually as collagen remodeling continues over the months following treatment.

For patients with deeper wrinkles, more advanced photoaging, or significant acne scarring, a series of initial treatments followed by periodic maintenance may provide the best opportunity for meaningful improvement. For patients seeking prevention or ongoing refinement, periodic resurfacing can be incorporated into a long-term skin-maintenance plan to provide cumulative improvement over time.

All patients are unique, and there is no single best resurfacing treatment for everyone. The Laser and Cosmetic Surgery Center of Houston offers numerous types of laser resurfacing, and Dr. Bogle will recommend a customized approach and treatment schedule based on your skin type, overall goals, degree of sun damage or textural change, lifestyle and tolerance for recovery time. Options may range from gentler, lower-downtime treatments to more intensive resurfacing treatments with a longer recovery period. A lower-downtime facial resurfacing treatment can also be performed in conjunction with more intensive treatment of specific areas, such as under the eyes or around the mouth, to target problem areas while limiting overall risk and recovery time. The goal is to achieve healthier-looking, smoother, refreshed skin while maintaining a natural appearance.

Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal can provide long-term reduction of unwanted hair over a series of treatments. It can be used on many areas of the face and body, including the upper lip, chin, underarms, bikini area, legs, chest, back, and abdomen.

Safe, effective treatment depends on selecting the appropriate laser wavelength and settings for your skin tone, hair color, hair thickness, and the treatment area. At the Laser and Cosmetic Surgery Center of Houston, Dr. Bogle personally evaluates each patient and performs treatment using technology selected for each individual. Laser hair removal can be performed on both light and dark skin tones when the treatment is appropriately selected and carefully performed.

Not all hair types and colors can be treated effectively. Dark, coarse hairs generally respond most effectively. Blonde, red, white, gray, and very fine hairs contain little to no target pigment and typically do not respond well. Those hair types may be better suited to electrolysis or other methods of temporary hair removal.

Tattoo Removal

Laser tattoo removal can gradually lighten or remove many unwanted tattoos. During treatment, laser energy is directed at the tattoo pigment, breaking ink into smaller particles that the body clears over time. Because this process is gradual, tattoo removal requires a series of treatment sessions over time.

The number of sessions and the degree of clearance vary considerably. Important factors include the colors and composition of the ink, the amount and depth of pigment, the tattoo’s age and location, your skin type, and whether the tattoo was applied professionally or by an amateur. Black and dark-blue inks generally respond more readily, while colors such as green, red, yellow, white, and flesh-toned pigment can be more challenging. Some light-colored or cosmetic tattoo pigments may darken after laser exposure, and complete removal cannot always be achieved.

Dr. Bogle will evaluate your tattoo, discuss the anticipated response and limitations of treatment, and develop a plan designed to achieve the greatest possible degree of fading or removal.

Stretch Marks

Stretch marks can develop during pregnancy, growth spurts, rapid weight change, muscle gain, or with certain hormonal influences. They most commonly affect the abdomen, breasts, hips, buttocks, thighs, torso, and upper arms.

Laser treatment can help improve the color, texture, and overall visibility of stretch marks, but no treatment can reliably erase them completely. Treatment is individualized based on the age, color, location, and texture of the stretch marks, as well as your skin type and goals. Treatment may include vascular laser therapy for red or pink marks, fractional laser resurfacing to improve texture, or a combination approach.

Newer stretch marks that are still red, pink, or purple generally respond better than older stretch marks. White or longstanding stretch marks can be more challenging to treat and may show no or only modest improvement.

Most patients benefit from a series of treatments, with results developing gradually as the skin remodels collagen over the months that follow. Dr. Bogle will evaluate your stretch marks and recommend a treatment plan based on their age, appearance, and your individual skin type.
